5 Skincare Mistakes You're Probably Making

Stop Sabotaging Your Skin

The Indian skincare market has exploded in recent years. Between K-beauty imports, Ayurvedic revivals, and a flood of new homegrown brands, there has never been more choice. But more products do not automatically mean better skin. In fact, some of the most common skincare habits in India are actively damaging your skin — and you might not even realise it.

Our dermatology-trained estheticians see the consequences of these mistakes every day. Here are the five most common ones, along with clear guidance on what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Skipping Sunscreen Indoors

This is by far the most damaging skincare mistake in India. Many people believe sunscreen is only necessary at the beach or during peak summer. The truth is that UV rays penetrate windows — whether you are sitting in your office, your car, or next to a window at home. UVA rays, which cause premature ageing and pigmentation, pass through glass almost unimpeded.

Additionally, blue light from phone and computer screens has been shown to contribute to pigmentation and skin ageing, particularly in darker skin tones. For anyone who spends hours looking at screens daily — which is most of us — this is a significant concern.

What to do instead: Wear SPF 30 or higher every single day, rain or shine, indoors or out. Reapply every 3-4 hours if you are outdoors. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. For Indian skin tones, look for sunscreens that do not leave a white cast — many Asian and Indian brands now formulate specifically for melanin-rich skin.

Mistake 2: Over-Exfoliating

Chemical exfoliation has been a game-changer for Indian skincare. AHAs, BHAs, and PHAs can transform dull, congested skin into a glowing, smooth canvas. But the enthusiasm has led many people to exfoliate daily or even twice daily, which is far too aggressive for most skin types.

Over-exfoliating strips your skin's moisture barrier — the protective layer that keeps hydration in and irritants out. When this barrier is compromised, you experience increased sensitivity, redness, dehydration, and paradoxically, more breakouts as your skin overproduces oil to compensate.

What to do instead: Exfoliate 2-3 times a week maximum. Start with a gentle AHA like lactic acid if you are new to chemical exfoliation. Listen to your skin — if it feels tight, stinging, or looks red after exfoliating, reduce frequency immediately.

Mistake 3: Mixing Active Ingredients Wrongly

The rise of ingredient-focused skincare means people are layering multiple active ingredients without understanding how they interact. Some combinations are wonderful — Vitamin C and Niacinamide boost each other's brightening effects. But others are genuinely harmful.

Combining Retinol with AHA or BHA acids can cause severe irritation and chemical burns. Using Vitamin C with certain forms of Niacinamide at high concentrations can reduce the effectiveness of both. Layering multiple exfoliating acids is a recipe for a damaged moisture barrier.

What to do instead: Keep your routine simple. Use exfoliating acids in the evening and Vitamin C in the morning. Introduce retinol slowly (once a week, building up) and never on the same night as acids. When in doubt, alternate active ingredients on different nights rather than layering them.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Your Neck and Chest

Your face routine should not stop at your jawline. The skin on your neck and chest (decolletage) is thinner, has fewer oil glands, and shows signs of ageing faster than your face. Yet most people apply their expensive serums and sunscreen only to their face, creating a visible contrast over time between a well-maintained face and a neglected neck.

What to do instead: Extend every step of your face routine — cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and especially sunscreen — down to your neck and upper chest. Use gentle upward strokes when applying products to the neck area.

Mistake 5: Changing Products Too Often

In the age of social media skincare reviews, it is tempting to switch products every few weeks chasing the latest viral recommendation. But most skincare ingredients need six to eight weeks of consistent use to show visible results. Retinol can take three months. By switching products every two weeks, you never give anything long enough to work — and you cannot identify what is actually helping or hurting your skin.

What to do instead: Commit to a routine for at least eight weeks before evaluating results. Introduce one new product at a time so you can identify reactions. Take progress photos in the same lighting every two weeks to objectively track changes.
